La La Land

La La land opening scene analysis

1.) Camera tracking is used in the opening scene as a way to symbolise how everyone wants the spotlight in hollywood. Characters all begin to sing and dance once the camera is pointed at them which highlights their ambitions and dreams in hollywood.

2.) The lack of shots also furthers my previous point, signifying the lack of chances for being big in the industry. i think Chazelle opted for the scene to be shot like this as it much like in the style of musical theatre (as musical theatre is often live.)

3.) The camera in a way acts like another dancer during the scene. This is due to the eye level shots, panning and rotation during the scene which is realistic. the way the camera rotates is like a head turing around. Handheld. Moving with cars and dancer helps the audience feels involved.

4.) The music at the begin begins diegetic but then turns non diegetic. This is commonly used in musical theatre to further a plot however in this particular scene it is used to merge the realistic and fantasy side of the film together.

5.) "its another day of sun' is optimistic and try to encapsulate there is hope in everyones ambitions in hollywood. -stuck going nowhere
"i think about the day......" the first verse is suggesting the sacrifices that a lot of people take in hollywood as well as acting as a intertextual reference to perhaps a romantic musical.
"ballads in the bathroom" all of the lyrics of the song really link to the journey into becoming an actor and the ambitions that many of these people have to become famous and successful. Non diegetic and diegetic to reflect the old fashioned musicals but grounded in reality where life isn't perfect.

6.) The musical performance indicates optimism through the use of colour, actors expression and the lyrics of the song. The title at the end uses a yellow colour, which is bright and often is used to symbolise happiness. The opening of the scene also pans from a bright blue sky, which uses pathetic fallacy in order to represent the mood of the scene.

7.) The reality of the scene is represent through the traffic jam of the cars which is common in highly populated areas such as hollywood. There is also a range in age, gender and race of everyone driving these cars which reflects the population of those that live in LA. There is also heavily polluted. The cars could also be a way to represent social class or the fact that "no one is going anywhere" but still have their aspirations.

8.) Chazelle has said that he wanted the film to be more of a "love letter" to LA. This has been  achieved through the warm colours used, the melodic lyrics and the overall mood within the scene. LA is often represented as a "dream factory" where dreams can be created.

9.) This opening scene gives a sense of escapism as you don't need to be an active viewer whilst watching. The mundane day turns into one that is loud, eye catching and entertaining. The music and high key lighting act as a way to try to entice you and hold your attention span. Personal identity could also be a part in how this film creates a sense of escapism for the view due to how it is relatable.
