Pans Labyrinth Analysis The scene opens with a close up shot of a girls face. Low-key lighting is used here in order to foreshadow that the film is in the horror genre. This is further emphasized through the mise en scene. There is blood coming from the girls nose, and blood is a convention of horror films. Her facial expression and heavy breathing within the shot also adds to the eerie mood. As the shot continues it is apparent that it is in reverse. This could imply that this is infact the ending of the film rather than the begin and that the film follows a different structure then most classic films and fairy tales.There is the a zoom into the girls eye. This is highly significant as eyes play a big part with the film as it constantly referenced. This is due to the time period in which the film is set, in which Spain was a civil war, and other countries were blind to this.
