Pans Labyrinth Analysis

The scene opens with a close up shot of a girls face. Low-key lighting is used here in order to foreshadow that the film is in the horror genre. This is further emphasized through the mise en scene. There is blood coming from the girls nose, and blood is a convention of horror films. Her facial expression and heavy breathing within the shot also adds to the eerie mood.

As the shot continues it is apparent that it is in reverse. This could imply that this is infact the ending of the film rather than the begin and that the film follows a different structure then most classic films and fairy tales. There is the a zoom into the girls eye. This is highly significant as eyes play a big part with the film as it constantly referenced. This is due to the time period in which the film is set, in which Spain was a civil war, and other countries were blind to this. There is shortly after in which the character places a broken debris of the eye back into the statute which kick starts the whole plot of the film and links these two worlds together.

The next shot is of a fairy tale type castle. This is used by the director as the film refers to fairy tales throughout, linking fantasy and reality together. In this shot low-key lighting is also present. It is also cool toned. This perhaps suggests the 'coldness' of the fantasy world in relation to the modern world. And furthermore foreshadows that something bad is going to happen in the fantasy world.
The use of light then is used to translate from the fantasy world to the reality. These next shots are warmer in tone to make the contrast really obvious to the audience. However the mise en scene of the debris and the skull connote the theme of death and destruction as well as work as a way to suggest the passing of time from the last shot.

The cars within the next shot also work as a way to imply a passing of time. The next shot of the book also is significant as it works into the genre of the film and also make the audience aware of the main characters interest in stories and fantasy moreover make it believable as to why she follows her tasks later on in the film.

Pans labyrinth- pale man scene
As Ofelia enters into the fantasy world she turns an hour glass to ensure she does not over stay in the fantasy world which alerts the audience that this world is dangerous. There is a medium shot of her back as she enters an aged hallway. Within this hallway there is warmer lightening then there is in the room she was previously in, in the real world. This acts as a contradiction as we are aware that this world is more unpredictable. The colour of the walls in this hall are red. It is possible that this red is symbolism for blood or anger from the pale man as this is where he resides. There is then a cross cut to the hourglass which really highlights that time is essential, and that we as an audience must not forget. It also foreshadows that Ofelia may lose track of time.

There is a medium shot as she enters the room.In the background we see the pale man at the table surrounded by food. Although the room looks ancient the lightening remains warm as there is a open fire behind him. These warm colours act homely and welcoming in the scene which contrast the reality of how unsafe Ofelia truly is. It is exactly these things that cause her to eat the grape from the table as she feels there is no true threat.

In the next medium shot a pan is used to show the stupendous amount of food at the at the tabel that has been untouched. This theme of craving and wanting is more intense here especially due to her current situation at home.
There is then a close up of a painting of the pale man, where he stabbing a child through the stomach. These disturbing images act as a warning to Ofelia. There is then a close of piles of shoes; victims of the pale man. This could be in reference to the shoes of those that were killed in concentration camps.
