Crimson peak

The scene begins with a close-up shot of the main character lying in bed. This shot creates a sense of claustrophobia as not a lot is visible. This makes the audience feel uneasy, much like the character does in this moment of time. In this scene, it is apparent that the tone of the film is serious. This is evoked through the low key lighting that it used. Through this, the director has created a sense of mystery as the setting is unknown to the audience. This also foreshadows that something bd is going to happen by building tension.
Thos close up shot then pans out to reveal the darkness that is the room. in this old eerie house. In this the image of where the character is is builded from the mise en scene. This being eveything in frame, the old style curtains and props.
The prop of the candle is a classic convention of horror movies. It allows the audience to know that this is a horror movie.
Props also allow the audience to know the time period in which the film is set. An example of this is when she is holding the candle. This is candles tend to not be used anymore.
This victorian setting is a horror convention, and has been used by the director in order to induce fear into the audience.
The diegetic sounds of heavy breathing from the character and the dog barking help to build an eerie image to the audience. There is also the digetic sounds of the floor and doors creeking, which is expected in the genre. There is also non-diegetic sounds, this being the high pitched noises that are somewhat monstrous. The costume is also key in this scene. The clothing of the main character
is an important factor in allowing the audience to know that the film is a gothic horror.
The camera throughout this scene follows the actresses, rarely being off of her. This is done to put the audience in the shoes of the actress., making it feel personal. It also allows the audience to be aware that she is on her own. There is no one else to film. This creates a sense of isolation which is a big convention of horror, making it more frightening. The fact that the character is a teenage girl is also a convention of horror, this is as they aren't as able to protect themselves in comparison to a grown man. This in a way could also relate to the demographic of who watch horror films, teens. This could be therefore more scary for teens as they can relate.

As the figure appears from the ground almost instantaneously the camera pans down to it. The fact that it was coming out of the floor could link to hell or the underworld. There is then shrieking, which obviously is frightening to the viewer, especially as it was unexpected. Due to the fact that this in a way climaxes, tension is created through the non diegetic sounds in the background of the strange synths and strings. Anticipation is made here as the sounds foreshadow a bad event such as death of the main character.
Volume is often played with a lot in horror films. This is through the extremes. Extreme quiet/silence and extreme loudness such as screaming and shrieking. This is as these are things in human nature which frighten us.
The dog is very significant within the scene. Not only does it act as a companion for the character but it makes the scene even more frightening. This is as animals are often used in horror movies as they are able to 'sense danger' and paranormal activity. The fact that the dog is also physically very small is ironic as this girl is alone in a creepy house in need of protection, only to be with a small dog which in a way exaggerates her vulnerability to the audience.

The whole scene is very typical of its genre and through mise en scene, lightning and camera angles, this scary surrounding is built.
